Chapter 5 - The Life Insurance Policy

I didn't sleep a single wink that night in the lonely hotel room.
I realized that my husband had been living a complete double life while secretly plotting to steal my assets.
At eight in the morning, I drove directly to the address listed for Chloe Evans's notary business.
It was a small, quiet coffee shop where she apparently met clients to sign real estate paperwork.
I walked right up to her table, slammed the photograph of the forged deed down, and sat across from her.
Chloe looked up, her face turning pale when she instantly recognized who I was.
"You committed felony fraud by notarizing a forged signature, and you are going to federal prison," I told her calmly.
Tears immediately began streaming down the young woman's face as she frantically shook her head.
She swore that Diego had completely manipulated her and promised they would get married once his "crazy" wife was gone.
I leaned closer, demanding to know exactly what else she had fraudulently notarized for my husband.
Chloe reached into her leather briefcase with trembling hands and pulled out a thick financial folder.
She slid it across the table, unable to look me in the eyes.
It was a newly approved life insurance policy taken out in my name just two weeks ago.
The payout was for three million dollars, and the sole beneficiary was Diego.
"He told me he just needed the money to pay off his father's debts," Chloe sobbed into her hands.
The smashed plate at the dinner table wasn't just a moment of spontaneous anger.
It was the very beginning of a calculated escalation that was supposed to end with my tragic, accidental death.
I realized I was dealing with a family of absolute sociopaths who would stop at nothing.
I stood up, took the life insurance documents, and walked directly out of the coffee shop.

I didn't go back to the local police station to file a simple domestic violence report.
I drove straight to the regional headquarters of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
