Chapter 2 - The Handcuffs

The police officer took my phone and connected it to the wireless camera feed from my handbag.
The entire dining room watched in suffocating silence as the high-definition video played on the small screen.
The officers clearly heard Victoria demanding my apartment and Richard demanding my money.
Then, they watched the undeniable footage of Diego hurling the heavy ceramic plate directly at my skull.
"Turn around and place your hands behind your back," the younger officer ordered as he pulled out his handcuffs.
Diego instinctively took a step backward, stammering that it was just a minor misunderstanding between a married couple.
The officer grabbed Diego's arm, spun him around, and locked the cold steel cuffs securely around his wrists.
Richard slammed his fist onto the mahogany table, his face purple with absolute fury.
"You are making a massive mistake, Valerie," my father-in-law threatened in a low, dangerous whisper.
He told me that he would hire the best divorce attorneys in the state to take half of my condo anyway.
He claimed that because we were legally married, my precious apartment was considered shared marital property under the law.
I pressed a clean towel against my bleeding head and smiled at the arrogant billionaire.
"I bought that apartment a year before I even met your son."
I explained that the property was entirely owned by a heavily guarded, irrevocable blind trust.
My name wasn't even on the public deed, making it legally untouchable in a divorce settlement.

Richard's jaw clenched as he realized I was completely immune to his financial threats.
But as the paramedics arrived to check my head wound, Natalie quietly slipped a folded piece of paper into my hand.
