Chapter 1 - The Perfect Liar

The heavy oak front door swung open to reveal two uniformed police officers standing on the porch.

Victoria instantly transformed her expression from panic to perfectly rehearsed terror.

Tears welled up in her eyes as she clutched the pearl necklace at her throat.

"Thank God you are here," my mother-in-law sobbed dramatically.

She pointed a trembling finger directly at me while I stood bleeding onto her expensive dining room floor.

"My daughter-in-law is having a severe mental breakdown and just smashed a plate against her own head."

Diego immediately stepped forward, nodding in solemn agreement with his mother's outrageous lie.

He told the officers that I was heavily medicated and prone to violent, self-destructive outbursts.

My father-in-law, Richard, calmly added that they were simply trying to stage a family intervention when I lost my mind.

The older police officer looked at my blood-soaked silk blouse and then turned his skeptical gaze toward Diego.

"Is this true, ma'am?" the officer asked, keeping his hand resting near his radio.

I didn't shout, and I didn't desperately try to defend myself against their coordinated gaslighting.

I calmly reached into my pocket and pulled out the electronic key fob for my car.

"Actually, officer, I installed a tiny dash-camera inside my purse because there have been car break-ins at my office."

I had placed my open handbag on the dining room sideboard right before dinner began.

"The camera has been recording video and audio of this entire dining room for the last hour."

Diego's confident smirk vanished completely as all the color drained from his face.

Victoria let out a sharp gasp, realizing her flawless reputation was about to be destroyed by a blinking red light.
