Chapter 9 - The Rescue

The heavily armed police officers flooded into the foyer, aiming their tactical rifles directly at my uncle.

The lead officer shouted a final warning, commanding Robert to drop the weapon and release the child immediately.

Robert pressed the cold barrel of the gun against Lily's tiny temple, his hands shaking wildly from the adrenaline.

He demanded a clear path to his vehicle, threatening to pull the trigger if the officers took a single step forward.

I tasted blood in my mouth from where he had struck me, but a fierce, overwhelming maternal instinct took over my entire body.

I knew that I absolutely could not allow my innocent daughter to die in the hands of a murderer.

I slowly pushed myself up from the floor, my eyes locking onto a heavy, crystal wine decanter sitting on the dining table.

I grabbed the thick glass by its neck, ignoring the sharp pain radiating through my injured jaw.

With every ounce of strength I possessed, I hurled the heavy decanter directly at Robert's face.

The crystal shattered violently against his forehead, causing him to cry out in immense pain and drop the handgun to the floor.

His grip loosened for just a fraction of a second, and Lily slipped from his arms.

I dove across the hardwood floor, catching my crying baby safely against my chest before she could hit the ground.

The tactical officers immediately rushed forward, tackling Robert to the ground and securing his hands with heavy steel cuffs.

The lead detective walked over, pulled Robert's identification from his pocket, and looked down at the bleeding man in disgust.

The detective announced that Robert was officially under arrest for the premeditated murder of Evan Whitmore.
