Chapter 5 - The Sabotage

The word murder echoed through the dining room, completely shattering my entire reality.
My kind, gentle husband had been intentionally killed, and my own family had paid to cover it up.
I screamed at my mother, demanding to know why Evan was targeted and who was responsible.
Denise explained that Evan had accidentally discovered a massive embezzlement scheme hidden within the family trust fund.
He had gathered physical evidence and was planning to expose the fraud to Grandma Margaret the very next morning.
The extortionists had tampered with his vehicle, completely severing his brake lines before he drove onto the highway.
They had then contacted Patricia and Denise, threatening to frame them for the murder if they did not pay the hush money.
Grandma Margaret's face turned into a mask of pure, unadulterated fury.
She ordered Richard to trace the routing number of the extortionist's offshore bank account immediately.
Richard typed frantically on his laptop, running the account details through a secure federal database.
The room fell into a suffocating silence as the loading bar progressed across his screen.
Richard suddenly stopped typing, his eyes widening in absolute shock behind his wire-rimmed glasses.
He slowly turned the laptop screen around so that my grandmother could see the final search results.

The offshore account did not belong to a mysterious group of dangerous hitmen.
The account was registered to a shell company owned entirely by Uncle Robert.
