Chapter 2 - The Forged Signature

I stared at the banking document in absolute disbelief.

My full legal name was printed clearly at the top of the account registration page.

I shook my head and told my grandmother that I had never opened an offshore bank account in my entire life.

Uncle Robert scoffed loudly from the kitchen doorway.

He crossed his arms and suggested that grief might have caused me to forget what I did with the money.

His cruel accusation made my blood boil, but I refused to let him manipulate the situation.

I demanded to see the signature page of the account application.

Richard calmly flipped to the third page of the packet and turned it toward me.

There, in black ink, was a signature that looked exactly like mine.

The loops and slants of the letters were a flawless replication of my handwriting.

But I knew instantly that it was a meticulous forgery.

I pointed to the date next to the signature and told them to look closely.

The document was signed on the exact day I was giving birth to Lily in a hospital on the other side of the country.

There was absolutely no physical way I could have walked into a bank to sign that paperwork.

Grandma Margaret narrowed her eyes and turned her fierce gaze toward Richard.

She ordered him to pull the full transaction history for that fraudulent account immediately.

Clara opened her laptop and quickly typed in the authorization codes to access the offshore ledger.

She read the screen carefully, her professional demeanor cracking for just a split second.

She announced that the entire one hundred and eighty thousand dollars had been withdrawn over a period of six months.

The money had not been used for rent, groceries, or baby supplies.

Every single dollar was sent to a private medical clinic located in Switzerland.

Clara printed the billing invoices and handed them to my grandmother.

Grandma read the patient name on the medical bills and turned as white as a ghost.

The invoices were for highly experimental trauma surgeries performed on a patient named Evan.

The dates of the surgeries were listed as three months after my husband Evan's official death certificate had been signed.
