Chapter 4 - The Confession

I reached down and picked up the burner phone before Patricia could snatch it away.
I held the glowing screen up so that my grandmother and the lawyers could clearly read the ominous message.
Aunt Patricia fell to her knees, burying her face in her hands as she began to sob uncontrollably.
Grandma Margaret stood up from her armchair, her presence dominating the entire room.
She demanded to know exactly who sent that text message and what phase two meant.
Patricia cried harder, shaking her head and refusing to speak a single word.
My mother, Denise, suddenly rushed over to Patricia and grabbed her by the shoulders.
Denise desperately begged Patricia to keep her mouth shut for the sake of the family.
I stared at my own mother in sheer horror, realizing that she was deeply involved in this twisted conspiracy.
I stepped toward my mother and demanded to know what they had done to Evan.
Denise looked at me with tears streaming down her face, her guilt finally breaking through her defensive facade.
She confessed that they were being blackmailed by a dangerous group of people who knew the truth about the crash.
She admitted that they had forged my signature to steal the money because they needed to pay the extortionists.
I asked her why anyone would blackmail them over a simple, tragic highway accident.
Denise closed her eyes tightly and let out a broken, agonizing sob.

She whispered that the highway crash was not an accident at all.
She revealed that Evan's car had been deliberately forced off the road, and the extortionists had video proof of the murder.
