Chapter 8 - The Standoff

The sound of shattering glass sent everyone diving toward the hardwood floor for cover.
The bullet missed its mark, embedding itself deeply into the plaster ceiling above our heads.
Robert panicked, dropping Patricia to the ground as he wildly scanned the perimeter of the house.
The wail of police sirens screamed down the quiet suburban street, growing louder with every passing second.
The flashing red and blue lights illuminated the living room walls, signaling that the house was completely surrounded.
Robert realized his carefully constructed plan had entirely collapsed into a catastrophic failure.
He backed away from the window, his eyes darting frantically toward the rear exit of the kitchen.
He knew he needed a massive amount of leverage if he was going to survive the police standoff.
He lunged across the dining room with terrifying speed, shoving my mother out of his way.
Before I could react, he violently yanked Lily from my arms, ignoring her terrified screams.
I screamed with all my might, desperately trying to claw my daughter back from his grasp.
Robert struck me across the face with the heavy grip of his handgun, sending me crashing onto the floor.
He backed toward the kitchen door, holding the crying baby tightly against his chest with the gun pointed at her head.

He shouted that he would shoot the child if anyone tried to stop him from leaving the property.
Suddenly, the heavy wooden front door was violently kicked open by an armed SWAT team.
