Chapter 3 - The Jailhouse Trap

The cold steel handcuffs bit deeply into my wrists as the officers dragged me into a holding cell.

The heavy iron door slammed shut, echoing with a terrifying finality.

I sat on the concrete bench and tried to control my frantic breathing.

My brother had weaponized the legal system against me with terrifying speed.

He must have claimed I stole the eighty thousand dollars from our parents before fleeing their house.

They were using their status as elderly victims to manipulate the police into locking me away.

I knew that if I panicked, I would play right into their twisted narrative of being unstable.

A tired female guard walked past my cell and asked if I wanted to make my one phone call.

I nodded quickly and followed her to a metal telephone mounted on the gray wall.

I did not call my family, and I certainly did not call any of my mutual friends.

I dialed the private number of Marcus Vance, the most ruthless corporate defense attorney in the city.

I had worked on a massive accounting project for his firm three years ago.

Marcus answered the phone with a sharp, irritated tone.

I quickly explained that I was sitting in a county jail cell on fabricated felony charges.

I told him about the joint bank account, the stolen money, and my family's elaborate conspiracy.

Marcus went completely silent for a moment before letting out a dark chuckle.

He told me not to say a single word to the detectives until he arrived.

I hung up the phone and allowed myself to feel a tiny sliver of hope.

I was escorted back to my freezing cell to wait for my high-powered salvation.

Two hours later, a detective in a wrinkled suit unlocked my cell door.

He told me my lawyer had arrived and escorted me to a small interrogation room.

Marcus was sitting at the metal table, wearing an immaculate custom suit and reviewing a thick file.

He looked up at me and slid a glossy photograph across the table.

It was a picture of my brand new car, completely engulfed in flames on the side of a highway.

Marcus calmly informed me that the police found a body burned inside the driver's seat.

My family had not just reported me for elder abuse and grand larceny.

They were currently framing me for the violent murder of my sister's ex-husband.
