Chapter 11 - The Phantom Parents

I stared at the faded photograph until my vision completely blurred with fresh tears.

My hands shook violently as I read the terrifying handwritten note over and over again.

The peaceful sanctuary I had built in the mountains suddenly felt like a highly vulnerable glass cage.

I immediately locked the heavy wooden door and activated the perimeter security cameras.

I grabbed my encrypted burner phone and dialed Marcus's private emergency number.

He answered on the second ring, instantly recognizing the absolute panic in my trembling voice.

I read the ominous note aloud to him and described the photograph of the smiling couple.

Marcus went completely silent, his sharp legal mind clearly processing this massive new threat.

He ordered me to pack a single bag with survival essentials and leave the cabin immediately.

He explained that if these people could find my highly classified address, they were already moving in for the kill.

I rushed into my bedroom and shoved warm clothing, a first-aid kit, and my tactical flashlight into a heavy duffel bag.

I retrieved the loaded handgun I kept safely secured inside my nightstand drawer.

My fake parents had never mentioned a single word about an adoption or a kidnapping.

They had always treated me like an unwanted burden, which now made horrifyingly perfect sense.

I was nothing more than a stolen asset they had used to mask their own dark past.

I zipped my duffel bag and slowly walked toward the backdoor leading into the dense forest.

Suddenly, the live feed from my perimeter cameras went completely black on my security monitor.

Someone had just professionally severed the fiber optic cables connecting my property to the main grid.

I heard the distinct, terrifying crunch of tactical combat boots stepping onto my wooden front porch.

They had absolutely no intention of waiting for me to willingly come back to them.
