Chapter 1 - The Revelation

I almost laughed at the absolute absurdity of her response.
Starting over meant they had conspired to steal my brand new car to sell it for cash.
They had orchestrated this entire pathetic dinner just to ambush me.
I looked down at the dealership printout detailing my car's exact resale value.
My parents did not even have the decency to look ashamed of their betrayal.
I reached out and picked up the keys to my new car from the granite island.
I then grabbed the keys to the old sedan and the folder containing the clean title.
I slid everything safely into my leather purse and zipped it shut.
I told them that I should not give away something that is not appreciated.
The kitchen went completely silent as the reality of my words settled over the room.
My brother immediately jumped up from his chair and blocked the doorway leading to the hall.
He told me I was overreacting and acting like a selfish child.
My mother started crying fake tears, begging me not to tear the family apart over a vehicle.
I looked at my brother and demanded that he step away from the door right now.
He crossed his arms and said nobody was leaving until we reached a fair financial agreement.
My sister crossed the kitchen and tried to physically grab my purse from my shoulder.
I shoved her back hard enough that she stumbled into the kitchen island.
My father shouted my name in anger, but I had already reached my absolute limit.
I pulled my heavy metal flashlight from my coat pocket and smashed the kitchen window facing the driveway.
The sound of shattering glass made all of them scream and back away in pure shock.
I used the distraction to shove past my brother and sprint down the dark hallway.
I burst through the front door and ran toward my shiny new car parked under the streetlamp.
I unlocked the doors with the fob and threw myself into the driver's seat.
I locked the doors just as my brother slammed his fists against my driver's side window.
I threw the car into reverse and sped out of their driveway without looking back.
I drove for three miles before my racing heart finally started to slow down.
I pulled into a brightly lit gas station to check if they were following me.
My phone buzzed in the cup holder with a new text message.

It was from my banking app, alerting me to a massive withdrawal.
My parents had just drained my entire life savings account.
