Chapter 12 - The Midnight Raid

The heavy wooden front door violently exploded inward before I could even take another breath.
Thick splinters of oak rained down across the living room as three men dressed in black tactical gear breached the entryway.
I did not hesitate or freeze in fear like the vulnerable victim my siblings had always assumed I was.
I raised my handgun and fired two warning shots directly into the beautiful hardwood floor near their heavy boots.
The deafening sound of the gunfire momentarily halted their aggressive advance into my home.
I used that precious fraction of a second to dive behind the massive granite kitchen island.
One of the masked men shouted that they were ordered to take me completely alive and unharmed.
I crawled desperately toward the back door, dragging my heavy duffel bag silently across the cold tiles.
I reached up and pulled the emergency fire alarm switch I had installed for absolute worst-case scenarios.
A blinding strobe light and a piercing siren instantly filled the cabin, completely disorienting the intruders.
I kicked the back door open and sprinted out into the freezing, pitch-black mountain forest.
The icy wind slashed fiercely against my face as I navigated the treacherous, rocky terrain from pure memory.
I could hear the heavy footsteps of my pursuers crushing the dry pine needles directly behind me.
I had spent the last two years exploring these dense woods and knew every single dangerous drop-off.
I deliberately led them toward a steep, muddy ravine that was completely hidden by overgrown thorn bushes.
I leaped effortlessly over the dangerous gap, landing softly on the thick moss on the other side.
The largest mercenary running blindly behind me did not see the massive drop in the darkness.
He tumbled violently down the jagged rocks, screaming in agony as his leg snapped upon impact.
The other two men immediately stopped their pursuit to tend to their severely injured comrade.
I did not stop running until my burning lungs begged for oxygen and the cabin was miles behind me.

I finally reached the hidden dirt road where I had parked a fully gassed backup off-road vehicle.
I threw my bag into the passenger seat and sped down the mountain, determined to uncover my true identity.
