Chapter 6 - The Winter Trap

I quickly shoved the bulky satellite phone deep into my coat pocket and turned off my flashlight.
The basement door was suddenly violently kicked open from the outside.
Daniel stood at the top of the stairs holding a high-powered flashlight and his silver handgun.
He marched down the steps with heavy, angry thuds that echoed off the concrete walls.
"One of you little brats stole my emergency phone," Daniel snarled, sweeping the light across our faces.
"Give it back right now, or I swear I will leave you down here to freeze to death."
I stood up tall, completely blocking his view of Noah.
"We have absolutely no idea what you are talking about," I lied smoothly.
Daniel grabbed my arm roughly and yanked me forward, pressing the cold gun against my temple.
"Do not play games with me, Kesha, my creditors are coming to collect their money today," he panicked.
Suddenly, a heavy glass wine bottle came crashing down violently over Daniel's head.
The thick glass shattered into a million sharp pieces.
Daniel groaned in severe pain and collapsed heavily onto the cold concrete floor.
I gasped and looked up to see Margaret standing there, her hands shaking violently.
"I let him ruin your life eight years ago, but I will not let him ruin my grandchildren," Margaret stated fiercely.
Chloe immediately rushed forward and kicked the handgun far away into a dark corner.
I quickly pulled the satellite phone from my pocket and dialed my head of security.
"Marcus, we have a massive code red emergency at the Colorado estate," I spoke rapidly into the receiver.
"We are tracking your satellite signal right now, boss, we are twenty minutes away," Marcus replied.
A massive wave of pure relief washed over my entire body.
I helped Margaret and Chloe drag Daniel's unconscious body toward a heavy support pillar.

We used an old extension cord to tie his hands and feet tightly together.
Just as I finished securing the final knot, a loud, deafening explosion shook the entire foundation of the house.
