Chapter 4 - The Custody Threat

A freezing gust of wind blew into the living room, carrying a massive cloud of white snow.
Chloe stood in the doorway, shivering violently and clutching her designer coat tightly around her body.
She had tried to run to her car, but the blizzard had already buried the entire driveway.
Daniel quickly hid the handgun behind his back and glared at his ex-girlfriend.
"I thought I told you to leave," Daniel spat angrily.
"My car is completely stuck in a snowdrift," Chloe chattered, her lips turning a pale shade of blue.
She looked at the terrified faces of my children and then noticed the unnatural stance Daniel was holding.
"Daniel, what are you hiding behind your back?" she asked slowly.
Before he could answer, I yelled out to her.
"He has a gun and he is trying to kidnap my sons!" I shouted over the howling wind.
Chloe's eyes went wide with pure terror.
Instead of running away again, she reached into her pocket and pulled out her cell phone.
"I secretly recorded everything you just said while I was hiding on the porch," Chloe declared bravely.
"If you do not let them go right now, I am sending this audio file straight to the police."
Daniel's smug expression instantly vanished, replaced by a mask of absolute rage.
He lunged forward with terrifying speed, grabbing Chloe by the throat and slamming her against the wall.
He ripped the phone from her hands and smashed it violently onto the hardwood floor.
He stomped on the device until it was nothing but shattered glass and bent metal.
"You really think you can outsmart me in my own house?" Daniel roared in her face.
He pointed the gun at Chloe's head, completely losing whatever remaining sanity he possessed.
While he was distracted, my brave eight-year-old son Ethan silently dropped to his knees.

Ethan crawled quickly across the floor and grabbed the heavy velvet ring box Daniel had dropped earlier.
Ethan stood up and threw the hard box as hard as he could, hitting Daniel squarely in the back of the head.
