Chapter 5 - The Brother's Betrayal

Daniel cursed loudly and stumbled forward, dropping Chloe to the floor.
He whipped around, aiming the weapon wildly at his own child.
"Do not ever touch my son!" I screamed, stepping aggressively toward the barrel of the gun.
Daniel was breathing heavily, a wild and desperate look flashing in his dark eyes.
"Lock the women and children in the basement right now," Daniel ordered his terrified relatives.
None of his cousins or aunts dared to move, completely paralyzed by fear.
Daniel fired a single warning shot into the expensive ceiling, causing plaster to rain down on us.
"Move!" he screamed at the top of his lungs.
Margaret scrambled to her feet and frantically pushed us toward the basement door.
"Please, Kesha, just do what he says before he kills us all," Margaret whispered frantically.
I grabbed my children tightly and guided them down the cold, wooden stairs into the dark cellar.
Chloe tumbled down the stairs behind us, coughing and clutching her bruised throat.
The heavy wooden door slammed shut above us, and the deadbolt slid into place with a loud click.
We were plunged into complete darkness until I pulled out my own cell phone to use the flashlight.
"No signal," I muttered, seeing the dreaded words on my screen.
"The basement is wrapped in concrete, cell towers cannot reach down here," Chloe explained softly.
I sat my children down on an old sofa and hugged them tightly, kissing each of their heads.
"I am so sorry I brought you here, my sweet angels," I whispered, fighting back tears of massive guilt.
Noah reached into his small winter coat pocket and pulled out a bulky, black device.
"It is okay, Mommy, I stole his satellite phone when he was yelling at the lady," Noah smiled proudly.
My jaw dropped as I took the military-grade satellite phone from my brilliant son's hands.

It had a perfect, full connection to the global network.
Before I could dial my security team, heavy footsteps pounded violently down the wooden stairs.
