Chapter 5 - The Blackmail Protocol

"Get down on the floor right now," Alexander commanded while drawing a heavy pistol from his waistband.

I dropped to my knees and crawled frantically toward the bassinet, pulling it beneath a sturdy oak desk.

The deafening sound of shattered glass echoed as bullets began tearing through the front windows.

"Damian must have placed a tracker on my car before the crash, and they followed the signal to your SUV," I yelled over the gunfire.

Alexander tossed a heavy Kevlar vest over me and the baby to shield us from the flying debris.

"We cannot fight off a dozen heavily armed mercenaries by ourselves," he shouted while returning fire into the dark woods.

I remembered the countless hours I had spent analyzing Damian's financial records.

"Damian doesn't actually have the money to pay these men because his trust fund hasn't unlocked yet," I realized aloud.

I dragged my laptop out of my bag and booted it up using the internal battery power.

"He borrowed ten million dollars from an international crime syndicate to fund his lavish lifestyle after freezing our accounts," I explained quickly.

My fingers flew across the keyboard as I logged into the backdoor of the offshore accounting firm I had discovered months ago.

Alexander reloaded his weapon and provided covering fire while I worked desperately.

I located the hidden, numbered account holding the syndicate's loan and initiated a permanent, unrecoverable deletion protocol.

"I just wiped out every single dollar Damian owes the mob, and I routed an anonymous tip to their boss about his location," I announced.

Almost immediately, the gunfire outside abruptly stopped.

The mercenaries’ encrypted radios crackled loudly with furious orders from their actual employers demanding they retreat.

We watched through the broken windows as the armed men climbed back into their trucks and sped away in a panic.

I let out a massive sigh of relief, but Alexander pointed a shaking finger toward the television screen mounted on the wall.

The news channel was broadcasting a frantic, tearful press conference led by my husband.

Damian was crying flawlessly for the cameras, holding up a fabricated picture of Alexander holding a gun.

"My deranged wife and my supposedly dead brother have kidnapped my newborn baby," Damian lied perfectly to the world.
