Chapter 1 - The Delivery Room Revelation

The cold hospital room smelled strongly of harsh antiseptic and the metallic scent of my own exhaustion.
Outside the frosted window, the relentless Nebraska snowstorm continued to howl against the glass.
I collapsed back onto the pillows while gasping for air after the final grueling push.
The doctor stared at my newborn son with wide and terrified eyes.
His hands shook violently as he held the fragile baby wrapped in a thin hospital blanket.
I tried to sit up despite the agonizing pain radiating through my tired body.
"What is wrong with my baby?" I asked in a panicked and breathy whisper.
Dr. Evans swallowed hard and slowly stepped closer to the edge of my bed.
"There is nothing medically wrong with him, Amelia."
"Then why on earth are you crying?" I demanded while desperately reaching out for my child.
He gently placed the warm, crying infant onto my bare chest.
"Damian Prescott has a severe genetic condition that makes him completely sterile."
My heart stopped entirely inside my chest as the monitor beside me began to beep faster.
"That is impossible because I never cheated on my husband," I cried out defensively.
Dr. Evans wiped a stray tear from his wrinkled cheek.
"I know you didn't, Amelia."
He reached out and gently touched a distinct, crescent-shaped birthmark on my son's tiny collarbone.
"I delivered Damian's older brother, Alexander, exactly thirty-five years ago."
"Alexander died in a tragic boating accident five years ago," I replied in absolute confusion.
"Alexander had this exact same rare birthmark, and his frozen genetic samples were stored at my private clinic."
The horrifying truth suddenly crashed down upon me like a heavy weight.
Constance knew Damian could never produce a biological heir to secure the massive family trust fund.
She had secretly bribed the fertility clinic to swap my husband's useless samples with those of his deceased older brother.
My newborn son was not Damian's child at all.
He was the sole, legitimate heir to the five-hundred-million-dollar Prescott financial empire.
Before I could even begin to process this massive betrayal, the heavy wooden doors of the delivery room burst open.
Constance Prescott marched into the room wearing a luxurious fur coat.

She was flanked by three massive, intimidating corporate security guards.
"Take the baby," she ordered the men with a wicked, triumphant smile.
