Chapter 2 - The Hospital Escape

I pulled my screaming son tightly against my chest and curled my body defensively over him.

The three massive security guards stepped forward with their hands outstretched.

Dr. Evans bravely stepped in front of my hospital bed to block their path.

"You have no legal right to be in this room, Constance," the doctor shouted firmly.

Constance simply scoffed and waved her hand dismissively at the elderly physician.

"I have a court order granting me temporary emergency custody due to the mother's unstable mental state," she lied smoothly.

One of the guards violently shoved Dr. Evans out of the way, sending him crashing into a tray of surgical instruments.

Adrenaline surged through my veins, temporarily erasing the agonizing pain of childbirth.

I reached behind my pillow and slammed my fist onto the red emergency Code Blue button on the wall.

Instantly, piercing alarms echoed through the hospital corridors, and bright strobe lights began flashing above the door.

Constance covered her ears and cursed loudly at the deafening noise.

Within seconds, a rush of nurses, orderlies, and specialized trauma doctors flooded into the cramped room.

The sheer volume of medical staff created a wall of chaotic bodies between me and the security guards.

A sympathetic young nurse who had been holding my hand earlier grabbed my wheelchair.

"Get in, quickly," she whispered urgently while pulling a blanket over my shoulders.

I climbed into the chair while clutching my baby, and she swiftly wheeled us out through the connecting bathroom door.

We navigated through a maze of back hallways until we reached the hidden service elevator.

"My car is parked on the third floor of the east garage," I told her breathlessly.

She pushed me all the way to my old sedan and helped me secure the baby into his car seat.

I thanked her profusely, locked the doors, and slammed my foot onto the gas pedal.

The tires squealed as I tore out of the parking structure and vanished into the blinding snowstorm.

I drove for twenty minutes until I was certain nobody was following me.

Then, my cell phone vibrated violently in the passenger seat.

I answered it on speakerphone, expecting to hear Constance screaming threats.

Instead, a distorted, robotic voice delivered a chilling message.

"You should really try tapping your brakes before you reach the bottom of this steep hill."
