Chapter 7 - The Undercover Agent

I screamed in pure, unadulterated agony as Amanda completely released her grip on my daughter's dress.
Sophie began to fall backward into the dark, terrifying abyss of the courtyard below.
Suddenly, a figure leaped fiercely from the heavy velvet curtains hiding the corner of the balcony.
It was Elena, our mild-mannered and quiet wedding coordinator.
She lunged forward with incredible speed, grabbing Sophie by the arm just as gravity began to pull her down.
Elena hauled the terrified child back over the stone railing and pushed her safely onto the balcony floor.
Before anyone could react to the impossible rescue, Elena pulled a shiny gold FBI badge and a sleek firearm from her blazer.
"Federal agent, drop your weapons immediately and put your hands in the air!" Elena roared with absolute authority.
She revealed that she had been deep undercover for months, investigating Mister Vance for a string of fatal real estate frauds.
Greg panicked completely, raising his suppressed pistol and firing blindly toward the balcony in sheer desperation.
The muffled gunshot echoed terribly in the small study.
Elena gasped sharply as the bullet struck her directly in the shoulder, tearing through the fabric of her blazer.
She collapsed heavily to the floor, her weapon clattering uselessly out of her reach across the hardwood.
Greg laughed triumphantly, preparing to aim his weapon at me to finish the job once and for all.
But the temporary distraction had given me exactly the opening I needed.
I unleashed a primal, furious roar and lunged directly at my former best friend with everything I had left.

I tackled Greg aggressively around the waist, lifting him entirely off his feet.
We crashed violently through the glass coffee table in the center of the room, sending sharp shards flying everywhere.
