Chapter 2 - The Hidden Cellar

I realized instantly that the security team was completely controlled by the corrupt attorney.

There was absolutely no way I could fight four armed men while protecting my seven-year-old daughter.

I turned away from the grand staircase and dragged Sophie down a narrow servant corridor toward the back of the manor.

I remembered touring the venue months ago and seeing an old, heavy iron door that led down into a wine cellar.

We sprinted past the catering kitchen, ignoring the confused shouts of the cooking staff.

I found the rusted iron door, shoved it open with my shoulder, and rushed us into the dark, damp staircase.

I threw my entire body weight against the door, sliding the massive steel deadbolt into place just as heavy footsteps reached the hallway.

The guards began pounding furiously against the metal, but the ancient door held firm.

I carried Sophie down into the pitch-black cellar, hiding her behind a towering wooden wine rack.

I pulled out Amanda's secret phone again, using its dim backlight to illuminate the dusty room.

I needed to know exactly who was orchestrating this massive conspiracy with her.

I opened a hidden folder on the device labeled as "Insurance Policies".

My blood ran freezing cold as I found a newly modified life insurance document bearing my name.

The payout had been increased to twenty million dollars, and it was set to activate immediately upon my death.

I clicked on a recently deleted voicemail attached to the file, bringing the phone close to my ear.

"Make sure the child is secured before you take care of Daniel, because we need no surviving witnesses," a familiar male voice ordered.

I dropped the phone onto the dirt floor in sheer, unadulterated horror.

The voice on the recording belonged to Greg, my oldest childhood friend and trusted business partner.

Before I could even process this ultimate betrayal, the faint smell of gasoline began wafting under the heavy iron door above us.

A blazing, bright orange light flickered ominously through the cracks of the doorframe.
