Chapter 9 - The Mastermind

The armored SUV flipped completely over, the screech of tearing metal drowning out my screams.
Shattered safety glass rained down upon us as the heavy vehicle finally skidded to a violent halt.
I unbuckled my seatbelt and crashed hard onto the ceiling of the overturned car.
Arthur groaned beside me, clutching a badly bleeding wound on his forehead.
The security contractors kicked the jammed doors open and dragged us out into the cold night air.
The black truck that had rammed us was parked ominously, blocking the empty street entirely.
A tall figure stepped out of the shadows, holding a suppressed pistol aimed directly at my chest.
It was not a cartel hitman.
It was Dr. Wallace, the disgraced hospital administrator I had fired just hours ago.
"You ruined my life, Clara," Wallace spat viciously, his face twisted in pure hatred.
"I spent twenty years building my career, and you took it away in five minutes."
He admitted that he had partnered with Brittany to orchestrate the fake cartel threat.
Wallace wanted to force me to transfer half a million dollars into his private shell account before fleeing the country.
"You burned down my parents' house just to scare me?" I asked, coughing on the thick smoke.
"They were collateral damage in a much bigger game," Wallace laughed maniacally.
He raised the weapon, preparing to eliminate the only person standing between him and absolute wealth.
But Wallace had made one massive, fatal miscalculation.
He forgot that I was surrounded by highly trained corporate security operatives.
Before Wallace could pull the trigger, three red laser sights appeared simultaneously on his chest.
Arthur's lead security contractor stepped forward, his assault rifle raised and steady.
"Drop the weapon, or you die right here on the asphalt," the contractor commanded ruthlessly.
Wallace froze, his arrogant bravado instantly melting into pathetic, whimpering cowardice.
He dropped the pistol and fell to his knees, raising his hands in absolute surrender.
The wail of police sirens pierced the night as dozens of cruisers swarmed the intersection.
Arthur had quietly pinged our emergency GPS beacon the exact moment the truck hit us.
The police dragged Wallace away in handcuffs, adding attempted murder to his long list of charges.
I stood in the wreckage, watching the flashing red and blue lights paint the city streets.
The fake cartel threat was neutralized, my abusive family was gone, and the extortionists were all in jail.
I had survived the ultimate trial by fire.
Arthur placed a warm blanket over my shoulders and smiled proudly.
"It is finally over, Clara," Arthur whispered softly.
"You have officially secured your empire."
I breathed a massive sigh of relief, ready to finally embrace my new, beautiful life.

But as the police processed the crime scene, an FBI agent approached us holding a thick, sealed envelope.
"Are you Clara Davis?" the federal agent asked, his expression completely unreadable.
