Chapter 1 - The Cold Rain

The icy rain soaked through my thin scrubs as I dragged my trash bags onto the sidewalk.
I watched the porch light flick off.
My family had plunged me into darkness without a single second of hesitation.
I pulled my phone from my pocket with numb, shaking fingers.
The blue ATM card Liam had tossed at me felt like a jagged piece of ice in my palm.
They thought they had successfully stolen my life savings.
They had absolutely no idea that Aunt Evelyn had deliberately set up that account as a heavily monitored federal trust.
I dialed the emergency number printed in small black ink on the back of the card.
It did not connect to a standard customer service center.
It went directly to the private line of Arthur Vance, the most ruthless and expensive estate attorney in the state.
The phone rang only twice before a deep, calm voice answered the call.
"Clara, I have been waiting for this call," Arthur said smoothly.
"They took the money, Arthur," I whispered into the freezing wind.
"All forty-two thousand dollars?" he asked, his tone shifting into something sharp and incredibly dangerous.
"Yes, they drained it completely an hour ago," I confirmed.
I heard the distinct sound of a heavy metal vault door closing in the background of the call.
"Perfect," Arthur chuckled darkly.
"Your foolish brother just triggered the contingency clause."
"What exactly does that mean for them?" I asked, shivering under the broken streetlamp.
"It means Liam did not just steal your money," Arthur explained.
"He committed federal wire fraud by electronically transferring funds from a protected corporate trust."
My breath caught in my throat as the gravity of his words finally settled in.
"Get a taxi and come to my downtown office right now," Arthur ordered.
"By sunrise, your arrogant brother will be in handcuffs."
I hailed a passing cab and sank deeply into the warm leather seat.
My phone suddenly buzzed with a mocking text message from Liam.
It was a picture of him and Brittany holding expensive champagne glasses.
"Thanks for the down payment on my new Porsche, loser," the message read.
I stared at the photograph and let out a cold, bitter laugh.

He was arrogantly celebrating his own destruction.
And I was finally going to let him burn.
