Chapter 5 - The Bloodline

I stared at the birth certificate, my mind racing in a hundred different directions.
I handed the phone across the desk to Arthur so he could read the extortion attempt.
He adjusted his glasses, his expression instantly darkening into a lethal, terrifying scowl.
"Brittany thinks she can blackmail us with a document Liam stole from Evelyn's house," Arthur growled.
"Is it true, Arthur?" I asked, my voice barely above an emotional whisper.
"Are they really not my parents?"
Arthur sighed heavily, removing his glasses and rubbing the bridge of his nose in frustration.
"Evelyn made me swear to tell you only when you were completely free from their toxic influence."
"Your biological mother was Evelyn's sister, a brilliant surgeon who died tragically shortly after you were born."
"Your adoptive parents were simply distant cousins who took you in just to collect the massive monthly stipend Evelyn paid them."
The revelation hit me like a brutal physical blow to the chest.
Every cruel insult, every discarded holiday, and every selfish demand finally made perfect sense.
I was never their daughter; I was just a lucrative paycheck.
"They kicked me out because the trust stipends stopped arriving last month," I realized aloud.
"Exactly," Arthur confirmed.
"And now that they have shown their true colors, Evelyn's real inheritance can be officially unlocked."
Arthur walked over to a massive steel safe securely bolted in the corner of his office.
He spun the combination dial and pulled out a heavy, velvet-lined box.
Inside was a staggering portfolio of international stocks, real estate deeds, and massive offshore accounts.
"You are the sole heir to Evelyn's billion-dollar medical supply empire," Arthur announced softly.
I was no longer just a struggling NICU nurse sleeping in cheap scrubs.
I was a literal billionaire.
"What do we do about Brittany?" I asked, a newfound sense of fierce power surging through my veins.
"We let her walk directly into her own grave," Arthur smirked coldly.
He tapped a few keys on his computer, easily tracking the location data from Brittany's text message.
"She is currently sitting in a downtown cafe, eagerly waiting for your surrender."
I stood up, grabbing my coat with a renewed, fierce determination to end this.
"Send the police to her location immediately, Arthur."
"Let us see how much leverage she has while wearing handcuffs."
Just as we turned to leave the office, Arthur's private phone rang with a blaring emergency tone.
Arthur answered it, and all the color instantly drained from his confident face.
"Clara, we have a catastrophic situation," Arthur whispered in horror.

"Your adoptive parents just showed up at the hospital where you work."
"And they are threatening to throw themselves off the roof unless you come down there right now."
