Chapter 8 - The Cartel Debt

My blood froze solid as Arthur's words hung heavily in the quiet office.
"He used my name?" I gasped, my mind racing through the horrific implications.
"Liam forged your signature on a digital loan agreement with a notorious underground syndicate," Arthur explained grimly.
"He planned to use the forty-two thousand dollars as a down payment to keep them at bay."
"But since the feds seized that money, the cartel considers the massive debt defaulted."
I sat heavily in my leather chair, feeling the weight of the criminal underworld suddenly crashing down upon me.
Liam had not just ruined his own life; he had actively painted a massive target on my back.
"How do we fix this, Arthur?" I asked, trying to keep the absolute panic out of my voice.
"I have already hired a private security team to shadow you constantly," Arthur assured me.
"We have the billions to pay off the debt, but giving money to a cartel directly violates federal anti-terrorism laws."
"If we pay them, the FBI will freeze the entire estate."
We were completely trapped between a lethal criminal organization and the unforgiving federal government.
Suddenly, the hospital fire alarm began shrieking violently above our heads.
Arthur's phone buzzed with an incoming video message from an unknown number.
He opened it, and we both watched the screen in absolute horror.
The video showed my adoptive parents' empty, foreclosed house completely engulfed in raging flames.
A masked man stood in the foreground, holding a piece of paper with my hospital ID printed on it.
"This is just a warning, Clara," a distorted, mechanical voice declared loudly in the video.
"Pay the half a million by midnight, or the hospital burns next."
I grabbed my coat, my protective maternal instincts instantly taking over.
"I have hundreds of vulnerable infants in the NICU, I cannot risk their lives!" I shouted frantically.
We rushed out of the office, surrounded by Arthur's heavily armed private security contractors.
We loaded into an armored SUV and sped away from the hospital to draw the target away from the patients.
I pulled out my phone and accessed the offshore accounts Arthur had set up for me.
"I am going to wire the money, Arthur, I do not care about the federal laws," I declared firmly.
"I will not let innocent people die for my brother's sins."
Arthur grabbed my wrist gently, stopping my hand from hitting the transfer button.
"Do not do it, Clara, this is exactly what they want you to do."
"Look at the routing number they sent for the transfer," Arthur pointed to the screen.
I stared at the numbers, realizing they matched a domestic corporate account, not an offshore cartel bank.
"This is not a cartel," Arthur realized, his eyes widening in pure shock.

"This is an inside job."
Before we could turn the car around, a massive black truck violently slammed into the side of our vehicle.
