Chapter 6 - The Edge of Sanity

The drive to the hospital felt like a terrifying blur of flashing streetlights and icy rain.
I arrived at the main entrance to find an army of police cars and fire trucks completely blocking the street.
A massive crowd of onlookers had gathered, pointing up toward the ten-story roof of the medical center.
My adoptive parents were standing dangerously close to the concrete ledge, screaming my name for the cameras.
The hospital administrator, Dr. Wallace, rushed up to me with a furious, blood-red glare.
"Clara, your insane family is causing a massive PR disaster for my hospital!" Wallace shouted angrily.
"You are suspended without pay until you get those lunatics off my roof!"
I ignored his pathetic threats and aggressively pushed past the police barricade.
I rode the elevator to the top floor, my heart hammering wildly against my ribs.
When I stepped onto the cold, wind-swept roof, my adoptive parents turned to look at me.
They did not look like helpless victims.
They looked like desperate, cornered animals trying to manipulate the public.
"Call the lawyers, Clara, give us the house back right now!" my adoptive mother shrieked into the wind.
"Liam is going to prison, and we have absolutely nothing left!" my adoptive father yelled.
"You brought this upon yourselves the very moment you stole my money," I replied calmly.
"If you jump, you will just be doing the world a massive favor."
My adoptive mother gasped in pure shock, completely unprepared for my absolute lack of sympathy.
They had expected the soft, obedient nurse they had easily manipulated for twenty-five years.
They did not realize they were dealing with the newly awakened heir to a massive empire.
They slowly stepped away from the ledge, realizing their manipulative stunt had completely failed.
The police immediately swarmed them, clicking heavy steel handcuffs forcefully onto their wrists.
"You are a monster, Clara!" my adoptive mother screamed as she was dragged away.
I turned around and walked back to the elevator, feeling completely weightless and free.
Dr. Wallace was waiting for me in the lobby, tapping his foot impatiently on the tile floor.
"You are fired, Clara, pack your locker immediately," he spat aggressively.
Before I could respond, a sleek black limousine pulled up to the front entrance.
Arthur stepped out of the vehicle, flanked by two towering, heavily armed security guards.
"Dr. Wallace, you do not have the legal authority to fire her," Arthur announced loudly.
"And why is that?" Wallace scoffed arrogantly.
Arthur smiled, handing the administrator a crisp, legally binding document.
"Because as of ten minutes ago, Clara's trust purchased a majority stake in this hospital."

"She is not your employee, Dr. Wallace."
"She is your boss."
