Chapter 7 - The New Boss

Dr. Wallace stared at the legal documents, his arrogant face crumbling into a mask of pure panic.

"This has to be some kind of sick joke," Wallace stammered, sweating profusely under the lobby lights.

"The only joke here is your pathetic administration," I told him coldly.

"You are fired, Wallace, have your desk cleared out in exactly one hour."

The lobby staff erupted into shocked whispers as the tyrannical administrator scurried away in utter disgrace.

I walked to the NICU, the place I had poured my heart and soul into for years.

My colleagues stared at me in absolute awe, having just watched me buy the hospital in a matter of minutes.

I immediately authorized a million-dollar budget increase for the entire pediatric ward.

For the first time, the tiny babies I cared for would have the absolute best technology available.

I retreated to the luxurious executive office that now legally belonged to me.

Just as I sat behind the massive oak desk, my cell phone rang loudly.

It was an automated collect call directly from the county jail.

I accepted the charges, morbidly curious to hear what Liam had to say for himself.

"Clara, please, you have to help me," Liam sobbed pitifully into the receiver.

"I am facing ten years in federal prison, and the guards hate me here."

"You should have thought about that before you stole forty-two thousand dollars," I replied mercilessly.

"Brittany set me up!" Liam cried desperately.

"She convinced me to steal the money so we could run away together."

"And now she is gone, and I have absolutely nothing."

I let out a cold, humorless laugh that echoed loudly in the spacious office.

"Brittany is currently sitting in an interrogation room facing severe extortion charges," I informed him.

"She tried to blackmail me, and she failed just as miserably as you did."

Liam fell dead silent on the other end of the line.

He finally realized that his selfish, greedy actions had destroyed his entire life permanently.

"Enjoy your new home, Liam," I whispered before hanging up the phone permanently.

I looked out the massive window of my office, watching the storm finally clear over the city.

I had defeated my abusers, secured my future, and ruthlessly protected my hospital.

I truly thought the war was finally over.

Then Arthur walked into my office, his face pale and completely devoid of his usual confidence.

He locked the heavy wooden door behind him and quickly closed all the window blinds.

"Clara, we have a catastrophic situation," Arthur warned softly.

"Brittany just confessed everything to the police, but she revealed a secret even I did not know."

"Liam did not just steal your money to buy a car."

"He borrowed half a million dollars from a dangerous cartel, and he used your name as the guarantor."
