Chapter 8 - The Darkness

I dove completely blindly across the dark room, aiming my body exactly where I remembered the surgeon standing.

I crashed hard into his legs, tackling him violently to the tiled floor before he could drop the cure into the fire.

My hands grasped desperately in the darkness, searching for the fragile glass vials on the ground.

The emergency backup generators finally kicked in, casting a dim, eerie red glow over the disposal room.

The surgeon kicked me hard in the ribs, scrambling away to grab the vials that had rolled near the burning chute.

He raised his hand high, fully preparing to throw my only chance at life into the roaring flames.

Before he could release his grip, a booming, authoritative voice commanded him to freeze immediately.

Two armed police officers were standing in the doorway with their service weapons aimed directly at his chest.

The janitor who had helped Ben in the basement had wisely alerted the authorities to lock down the entire building.

The surgeon slowly dropped to his knees, carefully placing the vials on the floor to surrender.

I scrambled forward and scooped up the glass tubes, clutching my own salvation tightly against my heart.

Just as I finally felt a brief moment of victory, the hospital intercom crackled to life with a frantic, terrifying page.

"Code Blue in ICU room four," the automated voice announced loudly.

Room four was the exact room where they were keeping my sister Rosie.
