Chapter 2 - The Empty Cooler

My heart completely stopped as the nurse’s terrifying words echoed through the sterile hospital hallway.
Ben pushed past me, sprinting desperately toward the heavy doors of the surgical wing.
Two burly security guards immediately stepped out from the stairwell, physically blocking our path.
Ben shouted frantically, demanding to know what had happened to the medical cooler containing my only chance at survival.
The head surgeon stepped out of the operating room, wiping heavy sweat from his pale forehead.
He claimed that a man dressed in a generic courier uniform had walked in and taken the cooler, saying he was sent by the lower laboratory.
I shook my head violently, realizing that the blood laboratory was on the exact same floor we were currently standing on.
There was absolutely no logical reason for a courier to transport the cooler to a different level.
I demanded that the hospital security team show us the hallway surveillance footage immediately.
We rushed into the cramped security office and watched the grainy video feed play on the monitors.
The camera clearly showed the supposed courier pausing near the elevator to remove his heavy baseball cap.

I gasped, feeling all the air violently leave my lungs in a single second.
The man holding my life-saving cure was David, the man I was supposed to marry next month.
