Chapter 6 - The Decoy

The sheer impact of the heavy concrete bags crushed the front of the SUV and instantly deployed the airbags.
The vehicle spun out of control, crashing violently into a thick concrete support pillar before coming to a dead stop.
I cautiously approached the smoking wreckage, my heart pounding so hard it hurt my ribs.
David was slumped heavily over the steering wheel, completely unconscious and bleeding from a nasty cut on his forehead.
I reached through the shattered passenger window and grabbed the red medical cooler with trembling hands.
I popped the plastic latches open, praying to see the glowing, life-saving vials packed neatly in dry ice.
I stared inside the cooler, feeling a wave of absolute, soul-crushing despair wash over me.
The cooler was completely empty except for three cheap plastic water bottles.
David never actually had the real stem cells in his possession.
He had orchestrated this entire chase simply to act as a decoy and lead me away from the surgical wing.
Someone else inside the hospital had already smuggled the real cord blood out of the operating room.

I realized with horrific clarity that the head surgeon was the only other person who had access to the delivery room.
I dropped the fake cooler on the asphalt and sprinted back into the hospital building.
