Chapter 9 - The Final Standoff

The intense heat from the exploding mansion washed over them even from deep inside the forest.

Mark held Sarah tightly as flaming debris rained down on the wet grass around them.

He realized that if they had stayed in that tunnel for one more minute, they would be dead.

Victoria checked her FBI communicator and confirmed that tactical teams were closing in quickly.

They needed to stay perfectly hidden until the federal authorities secured the entire area.

Suddenly, the blinding beam of a high-powered tactical flashlight swept across their hiding spot.

Three of David's surviving mercenaries emerged from the tree line, sweeping the woods for survivors.

They had thermal imaging scopes on their rifles and quickly spotted the family hiding under the oak tree.

The mercenaries opened fire, shredding the tree bark just inches above Mark's head.

Victoria immediately returned fire with her stolen rifle, providing desperate covering fire.

She yelled for Mark to take Sarah and run deeper into the dense, dark woods.

Mark scooped his daughter up in his arms and sprinted through the slippery mud and tangled roots.

He could hear the chaotic sounds of a fierce gunfight echoing loudly behind him.

He refused to look back, focusing entirely on keeping his little girl completely safe.

Mark found a shallow ravine and slid down the muddy bank to hide in the thick brush.

He covered Sarah's mouth gently to keep her terrified whimpers absolutely silent.

Heavy footsteps crunched on the dead leaves right above their hiding spot.

Mark gripped his empty handgun tightly, preparing to fight to the death with his bare hands.

A man jumped down into the ravine, and Mark immediately swung the heavy steel pistol at his head.

The man caught Mark's arm effortlessly and pinned him firmly against the muddy embankment.

It was David, completely covered in soot and holding a massive combat knife.

David sneered and stated that he always preferred to finish his problems up close and personal.

He raised the sharp blade, aiming directly for Mark's exposed and vulnerable throat.

Mark struggled wildly, but David was too strong and too fueled by absolute desperation.

Just as the knife began to descend, a loud voice ordered David to drop his weapon immediately.

Dozens of red laser sights suddenly pierced the darkness, painting David's chest with glowing dots.
