Chapter 8 - The Hidden Tunnels

David laughed cruelly as he looked through the heavy iron bars of the metal grate.
He mocked Mark for actually thinking he could outsmart a criminal mastermind.
David admitted that he wanted to watch them realize there was absolutely no way out.
He raised the remote detonator and pressed his thumb firmly against the glowing red button.
Mark shielded Sarah with his own body, fully expecting the mansion above them to violently explode.
Victoria aimed her stolen rifle through the bars and pulled the trigger repeatedly.
The bullets sparked against the iron grate, but David was already stepping safely back into the shadows.
He vanished into the darkness of the basement, leaving them trapped in the dirt tunnel.
Mark waited for the deafening explosion, but the tunnel remained completely silent and still.
Victoria checked her watch and realized the ten-minute timer had already hit zero.
She looked at Mark and stated that David's detonator must have somehow malfunctioned.
Mark realized they had a very small window of opportunity to escape before David fixed the explosives.
He remembered reading architectural blueprints of the estate years ago when he bought the property.
He told Victoria that these old bootlegger tunnels always had a secondary exit leading to the nearby woods.
They turned away from the locked grate and ran deeper into the dark, winding dirt tunnel.
The air grew incredibly thin and smelled heavily of damp earth and rotting wood.
Sarah held onto Mark's hand tightly, trusting her father completely to lead her to safety.
They navigated through the pitch-black maze, guided only by the faint light of Mark's smartphone.
After what felt like hours, they saw a faint glimmer of moonlight shining through a wooden hatch above them.
Mark climbed a rickety wooden ladder and pushed the heavy, moss-covered hatch open.
They climbed out into the freezing rain, emerging deep inside the thick forest behind the estate.
They had successfully escaped the trap, but they were freezing, exhausted, and miles from help.
Victoria pulled out her encrypted FBI communication device, praying that it still had a signal.
She successfully sent a distress beacon to her federal field office with their exact coordinates.
She assured Mark that heavily armed federal agents would arrive in less than twenty minutes.
They sat huddled under a large oak tree, finally taking a moment to catch their breath.
Suddenly, a massive, earth-shattering explosion ripped through the silent night sky.
May you like
They looked back through the trees and watched in pure horror as Mark's beautiful mansion was blown entirely to pieces.
A bright orange mushroom cloud rose into the sky, completely incinerating everything Mark had ever owned.
