Chapter 3 - The Intended Target

Mark ignored the desk sergeant calling out to him and sprinted back to his car.

He drove like a madman, running three red lights to get back to his sprawling estate.

The heavy rain made the winding roads incredibly slick and highly dangerous.

He practically destroyed his front bumper as he turned sharply into his private driveway.

Mark jumped out of the car before it was even fully parked in the garage.

He ran up the front steps and found the heavy mahogany front door wide open.

The wind was howling through the grand foyer, knocking over expensive vases.

He screamed Sarah's name at the top of his lungs, but only silence answered him.

Mark drew the licensed handgun he kept hidden inside the entryway table drawer.

He cleared the living room first, finding nothing but the jagged blonde hair still on the rug.

He crept slowly up the grand staircase, his heart hammering against his ribs like a drum.

Mark pushed open the door to Sarah's bedroom and let out a massive breath of relief.

Sarah was fast asleep in her pink bed, completely unharmed and totally undisturbed.

He kissed her forehead gently and locked her bedroom door securely from the inside.

If the intruders did not come for his daughter, he needed to know what they were actually after.

He walked quietly down the hall toward his private home office.

The heavy wooden door to his office had been violently splintered off its metal hinges.

Mark stepped inside and aimed his handgun into the dark, shadowy corners of the room.

His massive steel floor safe had been professionally blown open and completely emptied.

Millions of dollars in bearer bonds and sensitive corporate secrets were entirely gone.

Mark realized the tracker in Sarah's hair was meant to trigger the exact family drama that had just occurred.

The entire domestic dispute was a brilliantly orchestrated heist to steal his life's work.

Suddenly, a slow and mocking clap echoed from the leather chair sitting in the dark corner.

Mark spun around and aimed his weapon directly at the arrogant intruder.

The desk lamp flicked on, revealing Mark's trusted corporate business partner, David.

David was smiling wickedly and calmly spinning the silver scissors around his index finger.
