Chapter 8 - The Hunted

Two massive men wearing unmarked tactical gear stood in the doorway holding suppressed submachine guns.
Richard had clearly recovered and called in his private cartel connections to finish the job immediately.
The fake police sirens were simply an audio recording playing from a hidden speaker on their dark SUV.
I did not hesitate for a single, terrifying second.
I hurled the heavy bedside lamp directly at the face of the first armed hitman.
He stumbled backward, accidentally firing a completely silent burst of bullets into the plaster ceiling.
I dove low and tackled the second man by his heavy combat boots.
We crashed aggressively onto the hard concrete walkway outside the motel room.
I fought with the sheer, desperate strength of a father protecting his only child.
I managed to rip the heavy weapon from his grasp and strike him in the temple with the metal stock.
Both men lay completely unconscious on the wet pavement.
I grabbed their vehicle keys and sprinted quickly around the back of the motel building.
Maya was shivering in the dark woods, waiting exactly where I had told her to hide.
We jumped into the hitmen's heavily armored SUV and tore wildly out of the parking lot.
I finally felt a tiny shred of hope as we sped down the empty nighttime highway.
I dialed a trusted friend from my military days who now worked for the FBI in Houston.
I briefly explained the stolen money, the forged letters, and the undeniable proof of my murdered wife.
My friend typed frantically on his secure federal keyboard for several agonizing seconds.
He let out a heavy sigh that sounded incredibly grim over the speakerphone.

"Jason, you cannot come to the authorities right now," he warned me quietly.
"Evelyn was found brutally murdered in her home an hour ago, and your fingerprints are entirely covering the murder weapon."
