Chapter 7 - The Cornered Animal

I stared at the glowing screen in absolute, mind-numbing disbelief.

My wife Sarah had not died from a natural progression of her aggressive cancer five years ago.

Evelyn and Richard had paid a corrupt pharmacy technician to severely dilute her life-saving chemotherapy drugs.

They had essentially murdered the absolute love of my life just to steal our future savings.

The sheer evil of their actions caused a physical wave of nausea to wash completely over me.

I showed the terrible text messages to Maya, refusing to hide the truth from her any longer.

She wept bitterly for the wonderful mother she had lost far too soon.

I promised Maya that I would make sure both of those monsters spent the rest of their lives in a federal prison.

I knew I needed to get this burner phone to a clean FBI agent entirely outside of local jurisdiction.

I stood up to check the broken blinds of our cheap motel room.

Flashing red and blue lights suddenly reflected brightly against the dirty glass window.

The local police had already tracked my rental car's license plate directly to the motel parking lot.

A loud, aggressive pounding violently shook our thin wooden door.

A deep voice commanded me to open the door immediately with my hands raised in the air.

I grabbed the burner phone and the forged insurance documents from the bed.

I pushed Maya toward the small, frosted window located inside the grimy bathroom.

I told her to climb out carefully and run toward the dark woods behind the building.

I promised her I would create a massive distraction and find her soon.

I unlocked the front door and threw it wide open to face the authorities.

But the men standing on the walkway were not police officers at all.
