Chapter 6 - The Burner Phone

Maya was standing perfectly still in the doorway, completely unharmed by the gunshot.

The stray bullet had grazed my shoulder and shattered a decorative vase on the wall behind her.

I used my momentary tactical advantage to punch Richard squarely in the jaw.

His head snapped back against the hardwood floor, rendering him completely unconscious.

I scrambled quickly to my feet and kicked the heavy pistol far under the couch.

Evelyn screamed in horror and ran toward the kitchen to frantically call the police.

I grabbed Maya by the hand and sprinted out the front door into the afternoon sun.

We jumped into my rental car and I slammed my foot violently onto the gas pedal.

I knew my mother would spin a massive web of lies to the local authorities.

She would easily frame me for brutal assault and attempted murder within minutes.

We were now officially fugitives running from the law in my own hometown.

I drove erratically through the back streets until we reached a cheap motel on the outskirts of the city.

I paid the nervous clerk in cash and locked us inside a dingy, dimly lit room.

I took off my jacket and wrapped my bleeding shoulder tightly with a torn bathroom towel.

Maya sat on the edge of the bed, trembling violently from the horrifying trauma.

I reached into my pocket to check my phone, but my fingers brushed against something else entirely.

During the chaotic struggle on the floor, I had unknowingly grabbed a cheap burner phone from Richard's pocket.

I pulled the small device out and noticed it was completely unlocked.

I opened the text messages and my blood ran absolutely cold.

The hidden messages were not about my fraudulent life insurance policy.

They were highly detailed instructions outlining exactly how to tamper with my late wife's cancer medication.
