Chapter 1 - The Bread and the Betrayal

In that moment, everything I thought I knew completely collapsed.

I had flown to Austin intending to discipline my daughter, but instead I discovered an absolute nightmare.

Counselor Ortega watched me stare at the forged financial documents with a look of pure shock on my face.

My own mother had spent five years taking the money meant for Maya while convincing her that her father had abandoned her.

I asked the counselor to bring Maya into the office so I could speak to her immediately.

A few minutes later, the heavy wooden door opened and my beautiful daughter walked inside.

Maya froze the second she saw me standing by the wooden desk.

She did not run to hug me or cry tears of joy after five years apart.

Instead, she took a terrified step backward and instinctively shielded her worn backpack with her arms.

I fell to my knees and told her I loved her more than anything in the entire world.

I promised her that I had been sending thousands of dollars every single month since I left for Dallas.

Maya looked at me with exhausted eyes completely void of trust.

She reached into her faded pocket and pulled out a crumpled, tear-stained letter.

She handed it to me with violently trembling fingers.

I unfolded the paper and recognized my own handwriting immediately.

The letter cruelly stated that I hated Maya and blamed her entirely for her mother's death.

I looked at my daughter in absolute horror because I had never written those terrible words.

Someone had perfectly forged my handwriting to psychologically destroy my only child.

And the postmark on the envelope was stamped from a city I had never even visited.
