Chapter 3 - The Broken Trust

I felt a sickening wave of pure rage wash over my entire body.
My mother had sworn to me that Sarah's beautiful jewelry box was stolen by random movers five years ago.
Now it was sitting casually on her expensive glass coffee table being pawed at by a stranger.
I told Maya to stay completely hidden behind the large oak tree in the front yard.
I quietly tested the brass front door handle and found it unlocked.
I stepped into the grand foyer without making a single sound.
I could hear my mother laughing loudly in the living room with the unknown man.
I crept down the long carpeted hallway toward Evelyn's private home office.
I slipped inside the dark room and gently closed the solid wood door behind me.
The room was filled with expensive artwork and custom mahogany furniture paid for with my sweat.
I noticed a large steel safe hidden partially behind a heavy velvet curtain.
I walked over and examined the glowing electronic keypad on the door.
I decided to try my late wife's birthdate just in case Evelyn was truly that cruel.
The heavy metal bolts clicked open instantly with a sharp mechanical sound.
I pulled the steel door wide open and gasped at the horrifying sight inside.
There were thick stacks of hundred dollar bills tightly wrapped in rubber bands.
But resting beneath the stolen cash was a thick stack of legal documents bearing my name.
I pulled the files out and read the bold heading on the very first page.

It was a secretly drafted life insurance policy worth exactly three million dollars.
The primary beneficiary was Evelyn, and the policy specifically covered fatal industrial accidents at my exact workplace.
