Chapter 2 - The Stolen Life

I stared at the postmark from Chicago with my blood turning entirely to ice.

I had been working exclusively in Dallas for the past five years to pay our massive medical debts.

My mother had clearly hired someone out of state to forge these hateful letters and mail them to Maya.

I carefully folded the paper and placed it deeply into my jacket pocket.

I looked Maya directly in the eyes and swore on her mother's grave that the letter was a complete fake.

I pulled up my banking application and showed her every single transfer I had made to Evelyn over the years.

Maya traced the glowing screen with her bruised fingers as heavy tears finally spilled down her cheeks.

She realized she had spent five years slowly starving while her grandmother stole her entire childhood.

I gently wiped the tears from her face and promised her this terrible nightmare was finally over.

I thanked Counselor Ortega and officially signed Maya out of school for the rest of the week.

We walked out of the building to my rental car parked down the busy street.

I told Maya we were going straight to Evelyn's house to demand answers and get our money back.

We drove across town in a heavy, suffocating silence.

I parked two blocks away from my mother's suburban house so she would not see us coming.

We walked quietly up the concrete driveway toward the large front porch.

I noticed a brand new, highly expensive sports car parked casually in the open garage.

I crept forward and peered through the living room window to see what Evelyn was doing inside.

She was sitting on the couch drinking champagne with a man I had never seen before.

But what truly made my heart stop was the familiar object sitting on their glass coffee table.

It was my late wife's supposedly lost jewelry box, and the stranger was holding her wedding ring.
