Chapter 4 - The Deadly Partnership

I shoved the fraudulent insurance documents directly into my jacket pocket.

I could not believe the absolute depth of my own mother's terrifying betrayal.

I walked out of the office and marched straight into the bright living room.

Evelyn dropped her champagne glass onto the expensive rug the second she saw me standing there.

The delicate glass shattered into dozens of sharp pieces across the floor.

She stood up quickly, her face rapidly draining of all color.

The man sitting next to her did not look surprised or panicked at all.

I demanded to know why she had stolen my money and lied to my starving daughter.

Evelyn immediately tried to play the role of the innocent, fragile victim.

She clutched her chest and claimed I was having a severe mental breakdown from overworking.

I pulled the life insurance papers out of my pocket and threw them violently onto the coffee table.

Evelyn stopped pretending instantly.

Her expression hardened into a cold, unrecognizable mask of pure hatred.

She told me I was always a massive disappointment and that she deserved heavy compensation for raising my child.

I took a step forward to grab Sarah's stolen jewelry box from the table.

The stranger on the couch suddenly stood up and aggressively blocked my path.

He reached into his tailored suit jacket and pulled out a heavy black pistol.

He aimed the lethal weapon directly at my chest with a perfectly steady hand.

I stared at his face and finally recognized him from a corporate retreat years ago in Texas.
