Chapter 8 - The Whiteout

The heavy smoke grenade violently exploded, instantly filling the entire area with blinding, thick gray smoke.
Liam aggressively grabbed my hand and completely dragged me backward into the dense white fog.
My grandfather forcefully struck one of the confused mercenaries in the knee with his heavy silver cane.
Detective Miller immediately dove into the snowbank and rapidly fired two warning shots into the air.
The armed men blindly returned heavy fire, their bullets terrifyingly tearing through the wrecked fuselage behind us.
We frantically sprinted toward the massive, dark maintenance hangars located at the very edge of the airfield.
The freezing wind aggressively whipped the smoke around us, completely covering our desperate escape path.
I held Lily so incredibly tight to my chest that my arms violently ached with the effort.
We violently slammed through a rusty side door of an abandoned hangar and securely locked it behind us.
The massive, dark space was entirely filled with old aircraft parts and heavy maintenance equipment.
Liam frantically pushed a massive, heavy tool chest directly against the metal door to completely barricade it.
We could clearly hear the heavy combat boots of the mercenaries aggressively crunching on the snow outside.
My grandfather leaned heavily against the cold wall, gasping for air and holding his chest in pain.
He was far too old to be running through a freezing blizzard while dodging active gunfire.
I desperately asked Liam what we were supposed to do now that we were completely trapped like animals.
Liam confidently pulled out his old burner phone that still somehow had a faint, weak signal.
He quickly explained that he had anticipated my parents trying a dirty, desperate move like this.
He had not just stolen the evidence envelope from the safe, he had also secretly copied their offshore account routing numbers.
He rapidly texted the complicated numbers directly to a trusted hacker friend he knew from his military days.
He told me his friend could aggressively reverse the massive wire transfer if we could just stall for ten minutes.
Suddenly, the heavy metal door of the hangar violently shuddered under a massive, explosive impact.
The mercenaries had attached a heavy breaching charge to completely blow the door off its solid hinges.
A bright red laser sight violently pierced through the dark hangar and landed squarely on Liam's chest.

A cold, familiar voice echoed loudly through a megaphone from the freezing darkness outside.
My father confidently ordered us to surrender the evidence immediately, revealing he had never actually left the country at all.
