Chapter 1 - The Broken Trust

The police station was painfully bright and smelled intensely of stale coffee.

My grandfather walked straight to the front desk with an authority that completely parted the crowded room.

He did not wait for the desk sergeant to finish typing on his keyboard.

He simply placed his heavy silver cane on the counter and demanded the commanding officer immediately.

Within five minutes, we were sitting in a private office with a senior detective named Miller.

My newborn daughter Lily was finally asleep and properly wrapped in a warm thermal blanket.

Detective Miller pulled up my official financial records on his dual monitors.

He typed in my social security number with a heavily practiced speed.

Suddenly, the detective stopped typing and stared at the glowing screen in absolute silence.

His face drained of all color as he slowly took off his glasses.

My grandfather leaned forward and firmly asked what the man was looking at.

Detective Miller turned the monitor around so we could clearly see the screen.

It was not just the monthly trust fund payments that my parents had been stealing from me.

There were three massive corporate loans taken out completely in my name over the last six months.

My parents had legally registered their massive estate and all their mounting business debts entirely under my identity.

I was not just completely broke and homeless in the snow.

I was legally on the hook for nearly fourteen million dollars of active, defaulting debt.

My grandfather's eyes darkened with a cold, terrifying rage I had never seen before.

He immediately told the detective to issue full arrest warrants for my mother and father.

The detective nodded slowly but his eyes remained glued to a secondary file on the computer.

He clicked on a flagged legal document and his breath caught sharply in his throat.

He looked at me with deep pity in his tired eyes.

I asked him what was wrong and why he was looking at me like that.

Detective Miller whispered that my parents had not just stolen my money and my credit score.

He turned the screen to show a fully notarized birth certificate for my newborn baby.

The document legally listed my cruel sister Vanessa as Lily's biological and sole legal mother.
