Chapter 9 - The Final Standoff

The entire plane shuddered violently as the burning engine completely died.
Thick, toxic black smoke poured across the wet tarmac, completely obscuring my vision.
I dropped the empty flare gun and sprinted blindly toward the metal stairs of the jet.
I collided heavily with a mercenary at the bottom of the steps, knocking him unconscious with a vicious punch.
I climbed the stairs and entered the luxurious, smoke-filled cabin of the aircraft.
Pam was coughing hysterically on the floor, trying to protect her expensive briefcase of money.
I stepped right over her and moved cautiously toward the back of the cabin.
The smoke began to clear near the emergency exit door.
David was standing there, holding Mia tightly against his chest like a human shield.
He had a silver pistol pressed firmly against his own daughter's tiny temple.
Mia was crying softly, her beautiful face covered in dirt and tears.
"Back away right now, Arthur, or I will end her," David screamed, completely unhinged.
"You do not have the guts to shoot your own child, David," I challenged, stepping slowly forward.
Suddenly, Sarah appeared behind me, holding a heavy metal fire extinguisher she grabbed from the wall.
She looked at the man she had mourned for three years, feeling nothing but pure hatred.
"You are absolutely right, he is a coward," Sarah said with cold, terrifying certainty.
David swung the gun toward Sarah for just a fraction of a second.
That was all the time I needed to lunge across the luxurious aisle.
I grabbed the barrel of the pistol and forced it upward just as it fired into the ceiling.
Sarah completely bypassed me and swung the heavy fire extinguisher with all her might.
The solid metal cylinder struck David squarely in the side of his skull with a sickening crack.

David’s eyes rolled back, and he collapsed onto the floor of the cabin like a puppet with cut strings.
I caught Mia in my arms before she could fall, pulling her safely against my chest.
