Chapter 5 - The Broker's Suite

I charged across the luxurious living room and tackled Pam directly into the surgical table.

The metal table crashed to the floor, sending sterile instruments flying everywhere.

Pam screamed and clawed frantically at my face with her sharp fingernails.

I pinned her arms to the carpet and ripped the cooler away from her grasp.

"Where is the rest of the marrow?" I shouted directly into her face.

Pam suddenly stopped struggling and began to laugh with a chilling, hysterical pitch.

"You are way too late, old man," she spat viciously.

She told me the primary buyer had already secured the most important genetic samples.

I looked around the room and noticed the massive piles of cash stacked on the desk.

This was a massive, highly organized criminal operation.

"Who is buying my granddaughter's blood?" I demanded, pressing my knee into her chest.

Before Pam could answer, I heard the quiet click of a heavy door unlocking.

The bathroom door slowly swung open on its polished brass hinges.

A tall, well-dressed man stepped out into the living room.

He was holding a suppressed black pistol pointed directly at the center of my forehead.

He wore a blue surgical mask that covered the lower half of his face.

"Let her go, Arthur," the man commanded in a deep, oddly familiar voice.

I froze completely, my heart hammering a furious rhythm against my ribs.

I slowly stood up, keeping my hands visible as I backed away from Pam.

The man reached up with his free hand and pulled the surgical mask down beneath his chin.

The air completely left my lungs as if I had been punched in the stomach.

It was David.

He was Sarah’s husband, Mia’s biological father, and the man we had buried three years ago.

He looked perfectly healthy, staring at me with cold, dead eyes.

"Hello, Arthur," David smiled wickedly.

"I believe you have something that belongs to me."
