Chapter 2 - The Secret Port

I immediately dropped to my knees and placed two fingers against Mia’s tiny neck.
There was absolutely no pulse.
I tilted her head back and began performing emergency CPR.
Sarah screamed in pure terror and scrambled to find her cell phone.
She dialed 911 with violently shaking hands.
I breathed into my granddaughter’s mouth and pressed down on her fragile chest.
The world around me faded into a terrifying blur of panic and adrenaline.
Three agonizing minutes later, Mia finally let out a ragged, choking cough.
Her beautiful brown eyes fluttered open, completely glazed over and confused.
I pulled her against my chest and wept into her hair.
The blaring sirens of the ambulance arrived outside the house moments later.
We rode in the back of the ambulance, holding Mia’s hands as she slipped in and out of consciousness.
The emergency room at the city hospital was a blinding chaotic mess of white lights.
A senior doctor rushed into the trauma bay and immediately examined the surgical port.
His face grew incredibly pale as he traced the bruising on her legs.
He looked at Sarah and me with an expression of pure disgust.
"Someone has been illegally extracting bone marrow from this child," he stated coldly.
He explained that the ice was used to numb the pain and slow her circulation during the brutal procedure.
I pulled the black hotel key from my pocket and showed it to Sarah.
"Greg and Pam are selling her genetics to a broker at the Monarch Hotel," I whispered.
Sarah’s face contorted into a mask of pure, murderous rage.
Before she could march out of the room, the heavy double doors swung open.
Two uniformed police officers walked into the trauma bay with their hands on their holsters.
Greg was walking right behind them, holding a bloody towel to his face.
He pointed a shaking finger directly at my chest.
"That is the maniac who attacked my wife and tried to kill my niece," Greg lied smoothly.

One of the officers pulled out a pair of steel handcuffs.
"Arthur Vance, you are under arrest for aggravated assault and child endangerment."
