Chapter 6 - The Ghost of the Past

I stumbled backward, entirely unable to process the horrific reality standing in front of me.

"We buried you in a closed casket after the car crash," I whispered in shock.

David chuckled darkly and kept the heavy pistol aimed squarely at my chest.

"I faked the crash to escape the massive gambling debts I owed to the cartel," he explained smoothly.

He revealed that he had been hiding in Europe until he learned about his daughter's unique medical condition.

Mia’s rare genetic marker was the ultimate winning lottery ticket he desperately needed.

"You orchestrated the torture of your own flesh and blood for money?" I asked, completely disgusted.

David shrugged, showing absolutely no remorse for the pain he caused his child.

"She will survive, and I will live like a king in a country without an extradition treaty," he stated.

He gestured toward the metal cooler I had dropped on the floor.

"Now kick the samples over to me, and I might let you live."

I looked at the cooler, then looked at the heavy brass lamp sitting on the table beside me.

I kicked the cooler toward him, but simultaneously grabbed the lamp and hurled it at his head.

David fired the pistol, the suppressed bullet shattering the hotel window just inches from my ear.

The heavy brass lamp struck him directly in the shoulder, knocking his aim wildly off course.

I lunged forward and tackled him to the floor before he could pull the trigger again.

We wrestled violently over the gun, smashing into the expensive glass coffee table.

David was significantly younger and stronger, managing to land a brutal punch to my injured jaw.

My vision flashed entirely white with blinding pain as he pushed me off him.

Before I could recover, Pam swung a heavy wooden chair down onto the back of my head.

I collapsed onto the carpet, darkness immediately swarming the edges of my vision.

The last thing I heard before passing out was David's cell phone ringing.

He answered it and said, "Excellent, bring the child to the airstrip immediately."
