Chapter 4 - The Confession

Greg desperately clawed at my arm, gasping for a single breath of air.

I loosened my grip just enough for him to speak.

"She has a one-in-a-billion genetic mutation in her marrow," Greg choked out.

He explained that a wealthy medical broker was paying five million dollars for her live tissue.

They had been extracting small amounts for weeks while babysitting her.

Tonight was supposed to be the massive final extraction that would pay them in full.

"Who is the broker at the Monarch Hotel?" I demanded angrily.

Greg shook his head, completely terrified of whoever was pulling the strings.

"I do not know his real name, I swear on my life," Greg pleaded.

He told me the broker was packing up the medical suite and leaving the country at midnight.

I pulled a roll of heavy duct tape from the janitor's shelf and bound Greg’s hands and feet.

I slapped a piece of tape completely over his mouth to keep him quiet.

I walked out of the closet and stole a white doctor's coat hanging on a nearby hook.

I pulled the collar up and walked straight out the front doors of the hospital.

I used my pocket knife to hotwire an old pickup truck parked in the dark lot.

I sped through the rainy city streets, my knuckles turning white on the steering wheel.

The Monarch Hotel was a towering skyscraper of glass and steel in the wealthy district.

I bypassed the main lobby and took the service elevator directly to the fourth floor.

The hallway was completely silent, lined with thick, expensive red carpet.

I stopped in front of the heavy mahogany door of Room 412.

I did not bother knocking or trying to pick the electronic lock.

I stepped back and kicked the door right next to the handle with all my remaining strength.

The wooden frame splintered instantly, and the door flew open with a deafening crash.

I rushed into the room, ready to destroy whoever was inside.

Pam was standing over a stainless steel surgical table, frantically packing vials of blood into a cooler.

She looked up at me with an expression of pure, unadulterated shock.
