Chapter 7 - The Desperate Chase

I woke up groaning on the floor of the completely empty hotel suite.

My head was throbbing with a massive, blinding migraine, and blood was dripping into my eye.

The surgical equipment, the cash, the coolers, and the monsters were all entirely gone.

I desperately patted my pockets and realized David had not stolen my cell phone.

I pulled it out and frantically dialed Sarah’s number.

She answered on the first ring, sobbing completely uncontrollably into the speaker.

"Dad, they took her," Sarah cried hysterically.

She explained that a team of armed mercenaries dressed as paramedics had stormed the hospital room.

They overwhelmed the police and snatched Mia right out of her hospital bed.

"I am coming to get you right now, stay exactly where you are," I promised her.

I forced myself off the floor, ignoring the severe concussion rattling my brain.

I ran out of the hotel, jumped back into the stolen pickup truck, and sped to the hospital.

Sarah was standing on the curb in the rain, completely soaked and terrified.

She jumped into the passenger seat, and I slammed my foot on the gas pedal.

"David is alive, and he is the one who orchestrated all of this," I told her bluntly.

Sarah stared at me in pure shock, unable to comprehend the betrayal of her dead husband.

"He is taking her to the private airstrip on the north edge of the city," I explained.

I drove the stolen truck flawlessly through the dangerous, slick city streets at ninety miles an hour.

We reached the high chain-link security fence of the private aviation center.

I did not even touch the brakes as we approached the heavy steel gate.

The truck crashed violently through the metal barrier, sending sparks flying into the dark night.

We skidded onto the wet tarmac just in time to see a sleek private jet powering up its engines.

The massive turbine blades were spinning rapidly, preparing for an immediate takeoff.
