Chapter 8 - The Shipyard

I drove the expensive sports car through the locked chain-link gates of the abandoned shipyard without touching the brakes.
The car spun wildly on the wet concrete before slamming violently into a stack of shipping crates.
I kicked the damaged door open and pulled Nick out of the smoking vehicle.
"Stay here and keep the engine running no matter what happens," I ordered him sternly.
I sprinted into the massive, echoing warehouse holding only a rusted steel crowbar I found on the ground.
The cavernous interior was dimly lit by flickering industrial halogen lamps swinging from the ceiling.
My daughters were dangling high above a flooded dry dock, screaming desperately for me to help them.
Eleanor stood proudly on a metal catwalk, holding a remote control with a single red button.
"You are incredibly persistent for a fired employee, Sebastian," she mocked loudly from above.
"Let them go right now," I demanded, gripping the crowbar until my knuckles turned completely white.
"They die instantly unless you hand over the digital ledger you stole from Nick's server," she replied coldly.
I reached into my wet pocket and held up a small black hard drive.
"Come down here and get it yourself," I challenged her with a steady voice.
Eleanor laughed deeply and pressed a button, lowering my terrified daughters an inch closer to the dark water.
I realized I had to surrender the drive immediately to save their lives.

I tossed the device onto the concrete ground and stepped backward with my hands raised in defeat.
A sniper's laser suddenly painted a bright red dot directly on the center of my chest.
