Chapter 5 - The Real Enemy

I knelt beside the pathetic man who had ruthlessly ruined my career just hours ago.
"Where are my daughters?" I demanded loudly, pressing my hand forcefully against his bleeding wound.
Nick groaned in blinding agony and weakly shook his head.
"Eleanor took them from the school," he gasped, spitting blood onto the floor.
My exhausted mind hit a massive brick wall of confusion.
"Eleanor is the innocent victim here," I argued, remembering the poison and her collapse.
"She is a complete monster," Nick whispered desperately.
"She engineered this entire hostile takeover from the start, and I only found out too late."
He explained that he had fired me not out of cruelty, but to get me safely out of the blast radius.
He knew Eleanor’s hit squad was coming to the office that morning to wipe out the agency.
"She used your misplaced guilt to get you back inside my secure network," Nick coughed weakly.
I reached into my pocket and stared at the metallic flash drive Eleanor had just given me.
It wasn't a hacking tool designed to steal money.
It was a military-grade homing beacon, and I had just brought it straight to Nick's hidden safe house server.
The heavy glass doors of the office lobby downstairs suddenly shattered with a deafening crash.
Dozens of red laser sights cut through the darkness of the hallway outside the office.
"They tracked you perfectly," Nick said, closing his eyes in total defeat.

I grabbed Nick by his uninjured arm and hauled his heavy body to his feet.
We both had to survive this night if I was ever going to see my children again.
