Chapter 6 - The Glass Cage

Automatic bullets chewed aggressively through the drywall as we dove behind a thick row of filing cabinets.
I dragged Nick toward the emergency fire exit at the very back of his ruined suite.
"The stairwells are rigged with explosives," Nick warned, breathing heavily and bleeding freely.
We were entirely trapped on the tenth floor of a glass building completely surrounded by heavily armed mercenaries.
"We have to use the old maintenance vent," I told him, remembering my late nights exploring the quiet office.
I kicked out the metal grate near the floorboards and shoved Nick forcefully inside the dark shaft.
I crawled in right behind him just as the executive office door was kicked open by men in tactical gear.
We scrambled blindly and quietly through the dusty, narrow ductwork for several agonizing minutes.
The vent finally dropped us directly into the secure server room on the ninth floor.
"I need to access the mainframe before they cut the primary power," Nick said, stumbling to a glowing terminal.
He typed furiously with his one good hand, overriding Eleanor's digital surveillance locks.
"I found their thermal signatures," Nick announced, pointing to a glowing GPS blip on the screen.
"She has your daughters detained at the old abandoned shipyard warehouse on the docks."
Suddenly, the main electrical power to the entire building was violently cut.
The server room plunged into absolute, suffocating darkness and the cooling fans died.

A cold, familiar voice echoed from the ventilation shaft directly above us.
"You really should have left me on that road, Sebastian," Eleanor whispered into the vents.
